They initially earned their keep by hunting and controlling rodent populations around grain stores, thus proving invaluable to early agricultural societies. Ancient civilizations held cats in high regard. The ancient Egyptians revered them, associating them with goddesses like Bastet. In Norse mythology, the goddess Freyja had a chariot pulled by cats. Cats became symbols of grace, mystery, and protection across various cultures.
